Summary:
The pilot project described in the following pages is not complete. Rather, the first 19 months represent a beginning in an area where little has been done before - training for state arts agency staff and council/commission members. Although other professions recognize the need for prior training in management skills, the majority of individuals affiliated with state arts agencies have received primarily on-the-job training. The future of the arts clearly involves a growing leadership role for state arts agencies.
Abstract:
The pilot project described in the following pages is not complete. Rather, the first 19 months represent a beginning in an area where little has been done before - training for state arts agency staff and council/commission members. Although other professions recognize the need for prior training in management skills, the majority of individuals affiliated with state arts agencies have received primarily on-the-job training. The future of the arts clearly involves a growing leadership role for state arts agencies. Training is becoming a priority and is a slow and progressive process. Communication, group process skills and alternative problem-solving techniques were components of the pilot program coordinated by Western States Arts Foundation. The pilot program also served as a needs assessment. The implications are broader than just the Western region. They represent a diagnosis of the problems and training needs of any state arts agency.
