Abstract:

New video markets offer a source of new income to performing arts companies. But earnings from such activities are not likely to amount to more than a small portion of total revenue in the next few years and may be less than income derived from federal grants in the past.

Participation in new video markets may ameliorate some of the financial strain on performing arts companies. But there is a danger in overestimating financial benefits from these markets: attention may be diverted from the continuing need for private and public support.

Cultural programs are not likely to account for more than a small share of the made-for-cable program market and American companies will be competing with European companies for a share of the cultural market.

Potential earnings to all performing companies from cable cultural networks may range from $9 million in 1981 to $16.8 million in 1990, a fraction of federally-funded awards to the arts.

Performing arts companies may find it difficult to share in the revenues of video after markets. (from Highlights)
