Summary:

Abstract:

Several years ago Central Midwestern Regional Educational Laboratory (CEMREL) launched an extensive teacher education program. The purpose of the program was to train teachers in the art of teaching aesthetics. It was as part of that effort that this paper was originally written. The paper serves as an introduction to aesthetic education for teachers, administrators, parents and other interested members of the public. It presents a rationale for the inclusion of an aesthetic education in the schooling of every child in today's society. The whys and hows of aesthetic education will eventually appear as part of a methods text on aesthetic education, currently being written by practitioners in the field.
