Why Business Must Support the Arts

Author: Phillips, W.E.

Publication Year: 1980

Media Type: Report

Summary:

The author provides an overview of corporate support of the arts and the general value of the arts to the quality of life. What I want to convey today goes beyond the fact that the arts are critical to our quality of life and to the world in which business exists. There are also many immediate and direct benefits that can come to businesses that get involved in the arts, and the challenge for both business and the arts today is to find new ways for mutual involvement that can help each other. Businesses must give more than just money and the arts must reach out and make their resources more meaningful to corporations, companies, and small enterprises as well.

Abstract:

Paper presented at Conference on the Economic Impact of the Arts, sponsored by Cornell University, Graduate School of Business and Public Administration, held in Ithaca, New York, May 27-28, 1981.

We all can certainly recognize the direct impact of the arts on our quality of life. It has been clear to many businesses for some time that this quality of life in their communities and markets is not only desirable, but crucial to their success and their survival. (p. 1-2)
