Joint hearings on House Joint Resolution 639, a bill to authorize the President to call a White House Conference on the Humanities; held in Dallas, Texas, November 14, 1977; New York City, December 16, 1977; Los Angeles, California, January 3, 1978; Berkeley, California, January 4, 1978; Miami, Florida, January 9, 1978; Chicago, Illinois, January 13, 1978; Washington, D.C., January 23, 1978; and Boston, Massachusetts, January 30, 1978. Bill calls for a national conference to be held in 1979 to focus attention on the major issues and humanities policy in the U.S. The purpose of the Conference shall be to help develop a climate in which use of the humanities can flourish, to formulate an assessment of problems and issues relating to the humanities, and to develop recommendations relating to strengthening the humanities in all parts of the Nation. Includes testimony and statements by government officials and arts leaders and other documentation.
