Abstract:

This report concludes a major arts marketing study undertaken for Snug Harbor in the Spring of 1981.

Over a seven-month period, working closely with Executive Director Michael T. Sheehan and others, I studied three primary elements of the future arts at Snug Harbor: their audience, their program and their money.

To reach potential audience, we sent a printed questionnaire to approximately 4,000 Staten Islanders: we also interviewed in person approximately 400 people encountered in a variety of public places on the Island. Using these methods, and conversations with arts leaders on the Island, I was able to develop an assessment of Snug Harbor's potential to reach and serve a Staten Island audience.

To analyze program, I interviewed more than 70 people in depth: mostly arts and civic leaders on Staten Island, but also people elsewhere in New York and beyond. (A list of people interviewed is provided in Appendix A). Seeking specific information on programming like that most likely at Snug Harbor, I also travelled to confer with arts program leaders in Philadelphia, New England, Toronto and Upstate New York. (The people interviewed in these travels are identified by asterisks in the list of Appendix A).

To study money, I used both the audience survey and the interviews on program - plus a detailed analysis of the finances of other arts situations, and of Snug Harbor itself.
