Abstract:

Paper presented at the Fourth International Conference on Cultural Economics held
May 12-14, 1986, at the Palace of the Popes in Avignon, France.

The assertions made in this paper will be focused on lessons learned from a series of recent evaluations of cultural programs or projects for the government of Canada.     (p. 251) The author makes the following conclusion on evaluation studies: First, that it is possible, albeit imperfectly, to assess (evaluate) some of the claims made about the benefits to be had from public support for the arts. Secondly, that by evaluating these claims it is possible, over time, to contribute to a rational, or if you will, a critical discussion about public policy as it relates to the arts. (p. 254)
