Abstract:

The aging is a term that describes all of us, but the New York State Office for the Aging's constituency is limited to the nearly three million New Yorkers over sixty. They are sixteen percent of the state's population and twenty-three percent of all those old enough to vote.

Like all state agencies, the State Office for the Aging (SOFA) coordinates and pleads for funds. We administer Title III of the federal Older Americans act, a federal-state matching program for community services; Title VII which provides funds for hot meals for older people; and the state-local matching funds for the Recreation Program for the Elderly. With advice from senior citizen groups, we propose and criticize legislation on income, health care, housing, transportation, and social services. We also act as liaison between other state departments which affect the elderly. (p. 31-34)
