Abstract:

This conference represents the first time four leading organizations - Alliance for Arts Education, American Council for the Arts, Education and Americans, Inc. and the Department of Arkansas Natural and Cultural Heritage - concerned with the place of the arts in American education have collaborated on a major national meeting.

The title and point of departure for the conference derived from Coming to our Senses: The Significance of the Arts for American Education, a report published in May 1977. As the most comprehensive study ever undertaken on the role of the arts in general education, it was used as a broad policy study of the issues. Thirty selected recommendations from the report, of special interest to the delegates, were discussed in small group sessions.

There were no observers at Little Rock. All conferees participated in a carefully designed process of presentations and group discussions, the results of which are summarized in the following pages. The agenda provided a national overview of the field, stories of successful projects, lessons learned from these experiences in plenary sessions, and a description of the relationship between individual experiences and national trends.
