Summary:

Abstract:

This study concerns itself with the diverse relationships of communities to university arts programs. In this study, the team of authors develop and test a framework that will enable researchers to better define and understand the role of the arts program in the university, as well as the interrelationship between university arts programs and the local community. This complex classification matrix, which has been pilot tested, sheds light on the various dimensions of those relationships.  The framework uses            three-dimensions to describe the role of university arts programs in the university and community systems:

  1. internal versus external audience;
  2. university-only versus community-artist participation; and
  3. intramural/club versus competitive/professional character.
