Abstract:

Background papers prepared for the 46th American Assembly, of Columbia University, held at Arden House, Harriman, New York, November 1974.

Often considered cultural oases of calm, art museums are now in the throes of an identity crisis. While committed to collect, preserve display and elucidate works of art, these hallowed institutions are also trying to cope with criticism that they are not relevant to the community that helps support them. Given the enormous responsibilities involved in maintaining an effective operation with often limited financial backing, such criticism is cause for concern and misunderstanding.

In this volume, eight specialists, including museum directors, art scholars, an artist, and a psychiatrist, examine the aims, tasks, problems, and future of art museums. They tackle such problems as deaccessioning, the international art market, the representative - or nonrepresentative - nature of governing boards, demands for accountability to the public, and the spending of large amounts of money for major purchases. In the wake of such issues these experts respond to difficult challenges and suggest how art museums can continue to make significant contributions to the community while upholding the standards they must maintain to retain their unique character and potential for the future.
