Abstract:
The authors examine Herbert Gans' outline of cultural tastes as it pertains to the arts and music. Gans suggests that we can construct aggregates of individuals who may similar aesthetic choices in the realm of taste (taste publics). These choices are based on similar values and aesthetic standards which are connected to shared subcultural background (taste cultures). Background characteristics of taste cultures may include class (particularly the educational dimension of class) and age are the most important factors. The authors conclude . . .that neither age nor education discriminates clearly between taste publics in the way which Gans has suggested. The author uses rock 'n roll as an example.
