Symposium on Arts Education in Other Cultures; Introduction

Author: Bresler, Liora

Publication Year:

Media Type: Periodical (article)

Summary:

Abstract:

This symposium examines arts education policy issues - in the respective arts forms of visual arts, theatre, and music - in four countries: France, Israel, Canada, and Japan. Each of these countries represents a different culture and is shaped by distinct historical and sociopolitical realities. The four authors provide captivating descriptions and interpretations of these cultural contexts and their impact on arts education policy and practice. Inevitably, practice seems to lag behind advocacies. The issues of elite versus mass education and the related issue of aesthetic versus utilitarian art are common across countries, but the particular forces that shape them and the direction they take vary. The two levels of theory and practice provide us with insights about the customs, cherishings, and vision of these different cultures. (p. 10, 11)
