Abstract:

In February 1976 the American Crafts Council received a grant from the New York State Council on the Arts to conduct a study of the craft community within New York State for the purpose of delineating principal needs and problems of this community and suggesting possible solutions. The intent of the study was also to pinpoint and evaluate information needs of this community and to examine the community's perception of existing funding mechanisms as well as their experience with alternative funding possibilities. It was felt that this study should focus on all major sectors of the craft community comprising the following:

1. Craftspersons.
2. Schools and teachers (college, adult, private, public).
3. Multi-arts organizations.
4. Craft organizations.
5. Exhibiting organizations.
