Summary:

This report examines the perceptions of K-12 teachers of all subjects and of parents of school-age children about music education in schools.

Abstract:

This report examines the perceptions of K-12 teachers of all subjects and of parents of school-age children about music education in schools. Most teachers and parents are unaware that music and the arts are designated as a core part of the curriculum in federal education guidelines. Key findings include (1) nearly five times as many teachers think music and the arts should be a core part of the curriculum as they think their districts do, (2) fewer than half of school music programs have the musical instruments or even sheet music they need for all participating students, both teachers and parents say, and (3) nearly half of all parents and teachers support integrating music into the professional development of all educators.
