Abstract:

To help define the role of instructional television in arts education, we felt it necessary first to try to describe the status of arts education itself. We decided to contact a sampling of arts educators at the state and province level, people who would (or should) be able to provide us with relevant information and who would also be able to offer informed opinions. (We also tried to locate surveys, reports, etc., containing arts education statistics and other descriptive information; there is little readily available data on the state or national level, but some of what we could find appears within this section).

With the help of the National Association of State Directors of Arts Education, we selected twelve state- and three province-level educators. These were not random selections, and so may not represent all states and provinces.

The sixteen questions were divided into three categories: curriculum, students and teachers. Some questions called for quantifiable responses; others required narrative, qualitative responses. We expected (and received) many educated guesses, rather than hard data. Some respondents seemed to have excellent information storage and retrieval systems, while others either had scanty information or limited access (and time) for data collection. As a result, we have a wide range of detail and reliability in our responses). (p. 1, 2)
