Abstract:

The State Status Report provides a review of arts education access by comparing and condensing the data from the 24 existing state studies. These reports represent the most reliable research in the field and provide invaluable information for drawing together a picture of arts education across the nation. The majority of schools covered by these reports offer at least one arts subject. The reported availability of some arts instruction averaged 88 percent. Visual arts and music are still the two dominant disciplines offered in public schools, while dance and theater are lagging. Student enrollment across these states varied greatly. However there was a clear and positive relationship between arts education levels and graduation rates, behavior, attendance, dropout rates, and intended college attendance. Across all the reports the biggest factor in predicting availability of arts education was school size.
