Summary:

At the time this survey project was undertaken, the Tacoma-Pierce County area had neither the comprehensive arts programs nor ongoing specific arts programs for special populations. The net result was that uncoordinated and sporadic programming efforts were and still are happening in the attempt to expand arts to non-traditional audiences. This attempt has been hindered by a lack of information on the special needs of the audiences and on the activities that most interested these Special Populations. In the interest of providing a means for responsible and comprehensive arts programming to special populations, the Tacoma-Pierce County Civic arts commission partially funded a survey proposed by Allied Arts of Tacoma.

Abstract:

At the time this survey project was undertaken, the Tacoma-Pierce County area had neither the comprehensive arts programs nor ongoing specific arts programs for special populations.

The net result was that uncoordinated and sporadic programming efforts were and still are happening in the attempt to expand arts to non-traditional audiences. This attempt has been hindered by a lack of information on the special needs of the audiences and on the activities that most interested these Special Populations. In the interest of providing a means for responsible and comprehensive arts programming to special populations, the Tacoma-Pierce County Civic arts commission partially funded a survey proposed by Allied Arts of Tacoma to determine:

  1. What special populations wanted in the way of arts.
  2. What was getting in the way of participation to the desired degree.
  3. What resources existed within the special populations themselves to increase and facilitate arts programs. With the staff resources of Allied Arts and technical assistance from several community groups, the report that follows is the result of the survey.
