Abstract:

Paper presented at First International Conference on Arts and Economics, sponsored by the Association for Cultural Economics, held in Edinburgh, Scotland, August 8-10, 1979. Comment by James F. Richardson appears on p. 290.

Subsidy is the key to financing the arts in Great Britain. Without it, the performing arts would have suffered a lingering death. National finance for the arts is channeled through the Arts Council of Great Britain; however, there is no direct government control over its allocation. There is a private sector, comprising the West End, some seaside theaters, and touring companies, but most of the performing arts, including the theater, survive through subsidy. (p. 284)
