Abstract:
An attempt is made in this article to explain certain characteristics of the Western musical language by recourse to the sociocultural conditions prevailing in Europe during the high Middle Ages. Linkages are found between the natural, empirical, commensensical traits of Western music and the materialistic, sensate cultural system that emerges and grows by virtue of such factors as the ruralization of the post-Roman society, and the diffusion of its traits in the urban milieu from the 11th century on.
