Abstract:
This monograph was originally prepared as a Strategic issues paper for use as background material for the Strategic Issues Committee of the National Professional Advisory Council (NPAC) of United Way of America. The paper was presented to the Committee in draft form on May 11, 1981. Favorable reaction to the preliminary draft and interest generated by the paper among various reader groups, led us to revise the paper incorporating significant new data and developments of interest to the philanthropic sector - both donor and donee. Russy D. Sumariwalla is the author of this paper. Barbara Von Elm assisted him with data analysis and verification.
In this paper the author has attempted to summarize the current level of knowledge about some aspects of philanthropy in America. It is not meant to be an exhaustive study. The paper presents hitherto unpublished analysis of the performance of philanthropic giving over the past quarter of a century - unfortuntately, not a very encouraging picture. The paper also furnishes some new data on corporate giving.|In the section on philanthropy and public policy, the author presents a brief overview of the impact of budgetary, tax and regulatory policies on philanthropy. This includes a brief discussion of the implications for philanthropy of President Reagan's Economic Recovery Program. Written for lay readers, we hope this paper will provide food for thought for all those concerned with the health of the sector. But particularly, volunteer board members, voluntary agency executives, corporate leaders, foundation executives and public officials should find this a useful addition to their reading list.
