Abstract:

The author discusses the role of the artist in society. When analysing questions relevant to the place of the arts in a future society, one inevitably asks oneself how mankind can maintain its cultural specificities in the midst of a gathering flood of information, entertainment, distractions and cultural events flowing in from every corner of the world. Artistic creation, if it is to act as a force for change in society, is bound, by its nature, to involve conflict. Inevitably, the artist's own research must clash with the norms and rules of society. To work creatively, the artist must transgress the framework within which he creates; and yet his right to do so must always be recognized. This is another fundamental right reaffirmed in UNESCO's 1980 recommendation. It is up to all who are concerned with cultural policies to ensure that this right is upheld. (p. 26).
