Social and Cultural Issues in Poverty Models

Summary:

There seem to be a number of areas (poverty, crime, education, population) where social analysis requires a socioeconomic framework. It is often maintained that problem solving in these areas has been made difficult because policy recommendations have been based on single minded models that are inapplicable or emphasize only one dimension of the problem. For example, in the study of poverty dissatisfaction with the insights from neoclassical economics, because of its failure to include important cultural and institutional factors, has led a number of analysts to the construction of cultural and institutional models. I would like to look at some of these models, and the arguments they have touched off, to see what we can say about cultural and institutional factors in economic analysis.
