Summary:

Abstract:

"There is substantial evidence suggesting that cultural capital (CC), a resource associated with social class, structures patronage of performing arts. Yet the relationship between CC and performing arts consumption lacks clarity. The authors demonstrate that consumption motivations observed in behavioral processes in data collected from 12 cases low and high CC consumers fit within contingent patterns ンpatterns that are identified through "systematic combining" ンof theory refinement, by synthesizing the research literature and data analysis. They found that complementary factors such as age, gender/identity, self-concept, personality, stage in family life cycle, pre-adult exposure, place of residence, job and vocational focus, degree of social network responsibility at work and self-identified epiphanies modify CC influence on performing arts patronage. Consequently, such combining of case study data with theory captures close-to-sufficient varieties of complex processes in natural human environments."
