Abstract:

The arts in American education, represented by a diffuse field to be referred to as arts and aesthetic education for purposes of this document, have been engendering increasing interest and concern within the education community in recent years. Recognizing this increased concern, the National Institute of Education has sought to expand the role of arts research within the institute.

This policy of expansion has resulted in a need to be able to identify qualified researchers in the field of the arts. It was thought that a directory of researchers would fill this need by making it possible to locate research talent and expertise. In addition, a directory could help identify the areas of study in which those who label themselves researchers in the arts and aesthetic education have conducted their inquiry. Furthermore, it was anticipated that a directory would serve as an avenue of communicaton among the various groups and individuals interested in research.

The Directory is a listing of individuals who, for all their apparent diversity, share three characteristics:

(a) Their names were recommended by their peers.
(b) They have indicated their expertise and/or interest in one or several of the
     problem areas in arts and aesthetic education and related fields.
(c) With but one or two exceptions, they have submitted their ideas to the
     professional public in books and articles.
