Abstract:

This is a report from the National Task Force on Women established by the corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB). The Task Force has three objectives:

  1. To examine the extent to which women are employed at all levels in public broadcasting and are integrated into its policy-making and operations.

  2. To examine the visibility and image of women in all programming and the coverage of issues pertinent to women.

  3. To make recommendations to the CPB Board of Directors.

To carry out these objectives, the Task Force proceeded as follows: one week of public radio and television was monitored; employment statistics available from CPB and other sources were examined; a sample survey of employees of public television and radio stations was conducted by mail (this survey obtained) data on the employment of public broadcasting personnel at all levels); interviews were conducted of selected radio and television facilities and of one production house in order to identify attitudes concerning the employment and on-the-air appearances of women.

The Task Force report presents the information obtained from these sources on how women are currently portrayed on public radio and television, on employment patterns in public broadcasting, and on the attitudes of women and men concerning women's role in public broadcasting. Also contained in the report are the Task Force recommendations on policy and its implementation. This summary of the larger report contains selected findings from the studies and the complete recommendations from the Task Force. (p. 7)
