Summary:

A study from the Univeristy of British Columbia demonstrates the relationship between music education and achievement in core subjects for high school students in British Columbia.

Abstract: The relationship between participation and achievement in music and achievement in three core subjects, Math, English and Biology are examined based on data from standardized testing in those core subjects. Conducted over three consecutive years, music participation was consistently associated with higher academic achievement, particularly math and science. Through linear regression analyses, scores in grade 11 music courses could predict scores in grade 12 academic subjects. This study, conducted by Peter Gouzouasis and the University of British Columbia, supports the notion that music participation does not hinder, but rather promotes academic excellence in core subjects.
