T.J. Anderson, Chairman for many years of the CMS Committee on the Status of Minorities, supervised the preparation of this report with dedication and care. The CMS Report No. 3 includes Professor Anderson's overview of recent activities related to research on music of four major ethnic groups, several essays that explore curricular and research developments, a statistical report on the representation of ethnic minorities teaching at colleges and universities, and conclusions and challenges growing out of this report. On behalf of CMS and the music profession, I want to acknowledge the importance of this project and to thank our colleagues for their contributions: T. J. Anderson, Samuel A. Floyd, Robert Garfias, Norman C. Greenberg, Jamake Highwater, Georgia Ryder, Hiromi Lorraine Sakata, Eileen Southern, Barbara Tedlock and Wendell Whalum.
