Abstract:

Best known as a co-founder of the American Repertory Theatre, the author makes an impassioned plea for increased interaction between universities and the professional arts. He calls for the arts to make a carefully crafted and mutually beneficial expanded alliance with higher education. The author also believes it is time for universities to recognize that an opportunity---indeed an obligation---exists to serve an important cultural need, while simultaneously enlivening the atmosphere for learning.

By citing examples of efforts between universities and professional artists or companies that have taken place recently, the author emphasizes the potential mutual values of such associations. He also feels that each potential alliance must be tailored to fit local circumstances; and cautions that universities are large, complex organizations that resist innovation and change.

He closes the essay with a compelling reason to act:

Because universities are encouraging and educating the next generation of artists, they also have an obligation to contribute to the health of the disciplines for which their students are being trained.
