Production and Distribution Roles Among Cultural Organizations: On the Division of Labor Across Intellectual Disciplines

Author: Hirsch, Paul M.

Publication Year: 1977

Media Type: Report

Summary:

Abstract:

The author shows how the cultural industry system is composed of producers and distributors. Producers are tied to elite culture, and distributors to mass culture. Both involve commerce and aesthetics, but in different proportions. Similarly, the social sciences and humanities have divided the work of studying art. Humanities have looked at texts and social sciences at audiences. Hirsch argues for the integration of techniques in studying cultural products.
