Abstract:

The evolving nature of art and art education and the introduction of technology make the preparation of students for entry into professional visual art colleges a timely topic. Twenty-seven years of experience in art college administration makes it an even more interesting topic for me personally. To gain a broader perspective for this article, I surveyed the CEOs of the nation's independent colleges of art and design, asking them to describe what they thought was important in the preparation of art students. In this article, I present a summary of their comments and then conclude with some policy issues to consider.

The results of the survey raise a few policy issues, perhaps the biggest of which is how the art, design and education communities can better educate the public (particularly parents, counselors, and policymakers) about the nature of art and design careers and their importance to society.
