Abstract:

This article is about Convio, Inc., a company founded in 1999 by Vinay Bhagat, which began producing prepackaged software for nonprofit organizations to raise money, help communicate with their constituants and plan activities. Convio later expanded its product line by producing software for the political arena. The company was able to take advantage of the similarities between the political and nonprofit worlds, using ideas from one for the other. The article focuses on one of the company's clients, Democratic presidential candidate Howard Dean, who used an Internet-based fundraising strategy that included Convio software. His success with online fundraising helped him to raise more than $25 million by the end of September 2003 and make him the financial leader in the Democratic primary.
