Abstract:

The effort to strengthen arts education - in terms of content, resources, and status in the curriculum - is likely to continue on many fronts in the various states. Arts educators should continue to promote rigorous arts curricular across the nation, using the national standards and other sources of guidance. Those who hope for an expansion of the federal government's role in education, however, are likely to be disappointed. Although the federal government may continue to help galvanize the movement for higher standards (as it did, for example, in providing funds for the development of the voluntary national standards in the various subject areas) it is likely to take a low profile in this effort. There may be some possibility of a greater federal government role in assessments, to allow citizens to determine how well the various states are meeting the call for higher standards.

Arts educators should form alliances with the defenders of high-quality education, be they Democrats or Republicans.

Support for the long-term health of the arts will flow mostly up from audiences and participants, not down from public officials.
