Playwriting in the K-12 Curriculum: A Catalyst for Educational Reform

Summary:

Abstract:

Because playwriting is a dramatic process and its power to enhance learning is derived from its ability to connect imagined circumstances with concrete concepts, I have structured this article to follow an imaginary journey of a professional playwright struggling to identify how her work is significant to the reform movement currently underway in the U.S. education system. I have named my ficitious playwright Rosalie, and through her I hope to explore the circumstances we all must consider when determining policy for playwriting residencies for K-12 that will have a reforming impact. (p. 35)

In my work as an administrator of playwriting residency programs for public schools, I am constantly reevaluating the recommendations I make to the teaching artists I sponsor. What is the best method for instruction? What is the significance of the experience for students? How can our work have the most effective impact on the schools we serve? In pondering these questions, I must continually observe the reality of the classroom and reflect on how my policy recommendations relate to the events of an average day.
