Abstract:

Adaptistration is an ArtsJournal.com blog on the evolution of orchestra management. This post provides a brief observation on musician's unions.

Union representation provide musicians a uniform contract that covers wages, benefits, rehearsals, recordings, and working conditions. In addition, unions make available the opportunity for members to file complaints against management when necessary. A member of the orchestra is employed by the union to serve as the union steward. This is to ensure that the contract is being followed and to serve as a liaison between members and management.

In reality there are positive and negative aspects to unions. For example, the author asserts that some unions have grown so large that they look as if they are serving their own interests instead of those of the individual artist. Yet before union representation, musicians were subject to mistreatment and had no recourse.
