Abstract:

The relationship of the individual to the group in art education has never been easy. Those who have chosen art teaching as their life work often find themselves torn between two art worlds - one in which artists, working alone in the privacy of their own studios, are the dominant role models, and another in which they are also members of an education community that prizes and, indeed, rewards cooperation and teamwork. An increasing trend toward institutionalization of the arts has exacerbated those tensions and led to rancorous public arguments involving mainstream community values, artistic freedom, and censorship. And, more recently, debates have also arisen within art education regarding national standards that, if adopted, would limit teacher control over the art curricula. This article will explore some of those issues. (p. 2)
