Abstract:
This provides insightful perspectives on the critical role of the university and audience development by challenging the established view that ticket prices and transportation keep most university students away on Friday and Saturday nights.
The author's study suggests that neither ticket price nor transportation costs are the primary reasons that students choose not to attend arts performances. College students avoid arts performances primarily because they lack the motivation and the skills needed to look critically at art. The very recognition of value in the arts helps make arts performances seem less accessible to many students.
After describing the research he conducted with George Mason University students, the author suggests ways in which universities can attract students to performances by acknowledging and responding to the factors causing audience anxiety.
