Abstract:

This article examines new fundraising strategy models, such as those used by MoveOn.org and the Howard Dean presidential campaign, which have effectively mobilized grassroots support and raised money through the internet. Many nonprofits and charities replicate these models by focusing on building relationships with their supporters. Specifically, these groups are:

  • Using e-mail lists to solicit donations and rally support.
  • Running educational campaigns via e-mail to provide a constant flow of information.
  • Engaging the web as a tool for arranging informal gatherings that meet offline to maintain support involvement.

Nonprofit staff interviewed for this article emphasized the importance of nonprofits facilitating an ongoing exchange of ideas with their supporters as a step to cultivating donations. Real world examples of nonprofit groups who have been successful at using these new strategies are profiled.
