Abstract:

In October 1979, after substantial research and fact-finding interviews, it was determined that there existed a need for a concise, thorough economic profile of the non-profit cultural industry of Puget Sound. Because of lack of a comprehensive factual information base, there was, and is, a great deal of speculation about our local cultural industry.

Faced with this situation, and aware of the critical need for statistical data and concrete information, especially for long-range planning purposes, the Cultural Affairs Committee of the Seattle Chamber of Commerce established a task force of its members to design a research study which would not only fill the informational void already mentioned, but would also equip business, cultural and civic leaders with ready and credible data upon which to base their future decisions affecting the cultural life of our area.

Now that the study has been completed, a number of questions need to be addressed. For example:

  • What role should business play in the development of a cultural environment?
  • What role should art and culture play in the development of the business and industry system?
  • What are our individual goals and how do they fit with our community needs and wants?
  • Is the public getting its money's worth from our cultural institutions?
  • Can we really invent our cultural future? If so, what should it look like? What role should each sector and the citizenry play?

These and many other questions should be reviewed by each of us. We hope that this study - the Non-Profit Arts: An Industry Profile - begins to separate fact from fiction and will be the positive first step toward helping our cultural community grow and prosper as well as assisting us individually in meeting the challenges of the 1980's and 1990's.
