Abstract:
The focus of this article is on the efforts of the State of Minnesota to develop a dance program as part of the K-12 curriculum.
How can we get dance into Minnesota K-12 schools as part of the ongoing curriculum? was the policy question that formed the basis of the Minnesota Dance Education Initiative (DEI) pilot project in 1990 when planning began. Although the question, Why is dance a necessary and basic part of students' education? still needed sharper articulation, a critical mass of artists and educators who intuitively understood this and valued the art of dance formed the nucleus of a movement to establish a place for dance in the curriculum. Written statements that clarify the need for and purpose of dance education evolved from the DEI pilot project, which is one of action in the form of programs. Advocacy is an important by-product.
