Abstract:

Catalog of a traveling exhibition held in 1977 and 1978. The catalog serves as a history of the artistic work supported by the by the Federal government in the 1930's. The emphasis of the work is on government supported art projects in New York City and New York State.

This exhibition seeks to present examples of the kinds of art sponsored by the government in the 1930s. Some viewers may know the Berenice Abbott or FSA photographs; some may be familiar with the index of American Design plates; some may look back on the 1930s as an important period in mural painting; some may recall the importance of socially-conscious art of representations of the American scene; others may think of the period in terms of an earlier abstract art or in terms of the careers of well-known painters or sculptors like Guston, Pollock, Reinhardt or David Smith; others may think of the depressing subjects and sadness of some of the work; still others may recall the vitality of crowded scenes; but, probably very few people think of the enormous range of achievements of the great impact of Federal patronage. An exhibition like this, which brings together so many kinds of materials, doesn't offer an extensive view of any one of these areas, but attempts to give a better picture of the period and of the possibilities of public art.
