Abstract:

This issue of the National Arts Stabilization Journal entitled The Dynamics of Funding Relationships in the Arts considers diverse perspectives of practical and philosophical aspects among leaders in the arts and private philanthropy. One of the key themes of the issue is a desire for shared or mutually understood sets of values in the arts and grantmaking community.

Articles in this issue present the following:

  • The case is made for arts groups to understand how the values they uphold and embody in their work opens up the possibility of new, creative matches with potential funding partners.
  • A chronology of the ebb and flow of public policy and public and private funding over the last 30 years.
  • An environmental analysis to discuss the impact of foundation on the strategic outlook of arts organizations.
  • How the investor-investment relationship model emphasizes that a grant is a medium of exchange to achieve common ends.
  • A call for grantmakers to invest in creativity.

This issue also includes series of conversation-format essays with arts leaders discussing:

  • a repositioning of an opera company to dispel its insular image;
  • an account of the Smithsonians experience with corporate sponsorships lead to the creation of guidelines to ensure mutual understanding; and
  • an entrepreneurial strategy that made a small theater company a desirable marketing match for major corporate investors.
