Summary:

Abstract:

  1. Common mythos about development and the creativity of young children.
  2. Behavior patterns acquired by early-childhood teachers as a result of their personal experience.
  3. Recent research and scholarly contributions in the field.
  4. Formal policy statements on art education practice in early childhood settings.

These are the four foundational pillars on which the conceptions and practices of art education are built. In this article, I will address the possibility of reform in early childhood art education in the context of the impact of these four factors on everyday practice in preschool and primary education. I will discuss the confounding effects of myths, habits, research, and policy and argue that desirable change cannot take place until these four pillars are not only recognized but considered in an aligned fashion.
