The Musical Enterprise

Author: Bensman, Joseph

Publication Year: 1978

Media Type: Report

Summary:

This paper will attempt to outline the basic dimensions of the 'musical enterprise.' The music enterprise is defined as all those performers, officials, institutions, organizations, cultural and symbolic systems, positions and roles oriented to the production (composition) and distribution (performance and dissemination of performances and other forms of musical culture) of, in this case, 'serious' music. The problem of this paper is thus to focus upon factors that explain the continuous change in the central character of the serious music of an era, despite the innovation, conflict and lack of cohesion and consensus among individuals and structural components that characterize the musical enterprise.
