Abstract:

This publication is made up of contributions from music educators who work directly with exceptional children. It is intended to provide help for the music educator who encounters exceptional children in his regular classes or in special classes but who lacks formal training in special education. It contains chapters dealing with a wide variety of topics. Some emphasize the research literature and furnish a systematic background to a given specialty. Others stress more practical aspects and include examples of teaching techniques and descriptions of successful current practice. In accordance with what appears to be increasingly accepted usage, the phrase exceptional child is used here to include not only the handicapped but the gifted as well.

The present volume is the result of a session on Music in Special Education held at the National Biennial Convention of the Music Educators National Conference in Atlanta in 1972. The session was sponsored by the MENC National Commission on Instruction and brought together persons from throughout the nation interested in music for exceptional children. (p. vii)
