Abstract:

Disparaging remarks are often heard in education circles about the status of music in the schools. Some say music education isn't what it was when they were in school; they describe halcyon times. Others say that the programs are ineffective. Some point to new programs that look to the nonprofit music world to be the panacea for school music programs. Is there truth in these allegations and assertions? To find answers, one must consider economic and geographical differences, the quality and breadth of established and new programs, and the positioning of music programs in the whole education environment.
