Abstract:

This report examines the economic impact of cultural institutions on their communities. An approach developed in a pilot project in Baltimore in 1976 has been applied to follow-up studies in six other U.S. cities.

This chapter of the report examines the application of economic impact analysis in Minneapolis/Saint Paul, Minnesota and describes its institutions, economy, and broader cultural community. The impact of 10 local arts and cultural institutions on the local economy in 1977-78 are estimated:

Total direct economic effect: $28,599,891.
Secondary economic effect:
     1) Business volume: $57,211,537.
     2) Personal income: $21,720,604.
Full-time jobs: 3,053.
Local government revenues: $2,135,340.
Local government costs: $.1,146,525.
