Abstract:

This handbook was originally published in 1975. Topics include the definition of logo or logotype; using a contest to choose a logo, including legal issues, prizes and judging such a context; and examples of logos used by arts and other organizations.

The purpose of this handbook is to acquaint the reader with some of the problems and prospects involved in the creation and use of a logo for his or her organization. As a member of an organization, providing services to the public, you will necessarily be concerned with your image. How you perceive yourself as a group and how you are perceived by others may, at times, be central to the success of your endeavors. This image or character building will take many forms throughout the life of your organization and will evolve and grow, but one effective method of communication is through the use of a logo or symbol.
