This paper describes past and present ways in which the Arts business and government have coordinated their activities, to the benefit of people as individuals and as a society; the economic system; and the arts themselves. Examples provided show the active presence of the Arts in our society and the potentially important roles in local communities. Three proposals for additional or new support for the arts on the local level are presented.
