Abstract:

The National Opera Institute's rather unusual approach to confronting these and other problem areas affecting music theatre is The Colloquium, a three-step process NOI has utilized a number of times since it was founded in 1969. Past Colloquia have dealt with such topics as opera and television, the relationships between composers, librettists, and producers; training the singing actor; and the needs and aspirations of grassroots opera companies.

The three steps in the NOI's Colloquium process involve, first of all, the convening of a Task Force of fifteen-to-twenty specialists whose life work bears, in some way, on the topic under consideration; for several days this group wrestles with the Colloquium topic and ultimately formulates a series of preliminary recommendations for proposals. The second step is the General Session, at which the Task Force proposals are presented, scrutinized, amended, or added to by a larger group of invited professionals - concerned leaders in the field or fields being dealt with. (A full list of the participants in the 1982 Colloquium, incidentally, including the members of the proposal-generating Task Force, appears at the end of this report).

The last step in the processs is indeed the writing, publication, and dissemination of the Colloquium Report - the 1982 version of which you are now reading. (p. 6)
